Aleksander Ivanovich Kukhtenko is a well-known Ukrainian scientist in the field of automatic control, invariance theory and its application, abstract systems theory and a number of other areas of computer science problems. He skillfully combined fundamental research with the solution of applied problems in various fields of science and technology.

A.I. Kukhtenko was born on March 11, 1914 in the town of Gorodnya, Chernigov region, in the family of a mathematics and physics teacher. In 1928, he entered the vocational school at the Luhansk October revolution steam locomotive plant. In March 1932 he passed the entrance examinations to the Industrial Institute, in 1936 he graduated with honors and received a diploma of a mining electrical engineer. For several years he taught at this institute, combining pedagogical work with scientific work.

Alexander Ivanovich is a participant in the Great Patriotic War, fought in the artillery troops of the I and IV Ukrainian fronts, was awarded the Order of the Red Star. At the end of the war, A.I. Kukhtenko returned to scientific activity and from 1946 to 1955 headed the department at the Institute of Mining Mechanics of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. In the period 1956-1978 headed the Department of Automation of the Kiev Institute of Civil Aviation Engineers (KIIGA). In 1963 he went to work at the Institute of Cybernetics as the head of the department, continuing his pedagogical and research work at KIIGA. From 1965 to 1985 headed the department of technical cybernetics of the institute. He was the initiator of research of promising new directions in the theory and practice of control. Noteworthy are his studies of abstract mathematical structures as the basis for interdisciplinary connections of sciences, which remain a source of new ideas in the field of mathematical systems theory and control theory. These studies formed the basis of scientific directions that are currently developing at the Institute of Applied Systems Analysis of NTUU " Igor Sikorskiy Kyiv Polytechnic Institute."

The range of his scientific interests was very wide and covered both the sphere of abstract research in general systems theory and one of the most important applied areas — automation of air traffic control processes, aircraft control.

A.I. Kukhtenko paid great attention to the training of engineering and scientific personnel, created his own school in the field of automatic control theory and systems research. Many of his students and followers became candidates and doctors of sciences.

In 1964 he was elected a corresponding member, and in 1972 — an academician of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine; twice awarded the State Prize of Ukraine - for the preparation of the first in the world literature "Encyclopedia of Cybernetics" in 1974 and for a series of works on the theory of invariance of automatic control systems in 1991, as well as many government awards, honorary titles and certificates, orders and medals.

The main achievements of the scientist belong to different areas of control science. In the early period, he conducted research on the dynamics of nonholonomic systems and obtained scientifically significant results on the stability of motion of nonholonomic systems as applied to the problem of controlling the motion of an aircraft.

In the field of invariance theory and its application, he achieved fundamental results, in particular, together with academician B.N. Petrov formulated necessary and sufficient conditions for the physical feasibility of absolutely invariant systems described by ordinary linear differential equations with constant coefficients. Based on the results of research related to invariance, the monograph "Problems of Invariance in Automation" was published.

The last period of Aleksandr Ivanovich's scientific activity is associated with fundamental research in abstract systems theory and its applications, in particular in control. Questions of methodology and history of science, its popularization have always been in the focus of the scientist's attention almost from the very beginning of his scientific activity. There were published such works: "Fragments of the history of the formation of cybernetics", "From N. Wiener to the present day", etc.

His multifaceted scientific, organizational and social activities were highly appreciated by the domestic and world community. During his life Alexander Ivanovich was a decent, highly intelligent person who completely devoted his life serving to science.

XXI International Conference on Automatic Control, which was hold from 23 to 27 September 2014 at the National Technical University of Ukraine " Igor Sikorskiy Kyiv Polytechnic Institute ", IASA, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of an outstanding scientist.
